DESCRIPTION
This 2 ring forged piston is manufactured to 1961 onwards height. Manufactured from our own custom made forge tool. Optimised for strength and weight, far superior to anything else that has been available with a 30 year track record now.
Available through the website to suit standard Norton combustion chambers, we offer 2 variants. The 500cc, 86mm with a 7/8" pin (Norton used a 1" pin) is 125g lighter than the original piston. However, obviously this does necessitate fitting a different little end bush to standard engines. (Available from us). The smaller diameter pin not only makes the piston lighter but also stronger as there is more material left around the pin bosses.
The 350cc, 76mm variant is offered with a 20mm pin (Norton used a 7/8" pin) and is 75g lighter than the original Norton piston.
Although these pistons are superior to original, they are hard work to fit to pre 1961 engines as not only do you need to fit a smaller LE bush but also the barrel needs to be shorter as the later 2 ring pistons are about 4mm lower compression height than the earlier 3 ring variants. This is particularly difficult on Oldham Coupling engines.
We also offer many special Manx pistons: Black topped 86mm, Bathtub combustion chamber 86mm, 90mm, 92mm, 95mm in 2 valve & 4 valve format, 81mm bore (350cc)and 79.62mm (Longstroke). These cannot be purchased online, you need to contact us.
Please note that there are no oversized pistons available for Manx engines.
Standard rings are Nitrided and supplied with a case hardened EN39 gudgeon pin.
We strongly recommend the use of a DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) Gudgeon Pin which drastically extends the life of the pin, piston & little end bush.
Our standard Nitrided rings are a top quality all round solution, but for Nikasil bores, Titanium Nitride (TiN) Coated rings are advantageous.
